The hotel and restaurant management curriculum has been developed with input from the hospitality industry. Therefore hotel and restaurant management course work accurately reflects the knowledge and skills necessary for a management position in this industry.
Students take general education coursework combined with core of business and hospitality management courses that identify the economic, legal and social forces, which shape the hospitality industry. Problem-solving and human relation skills are emphasized. It includes industries such as lodging, food services, travel and entertainment. The industry has become increasingly complex, requiring that employees be highly knowledgeable. Employment standards at all levels of the industry have increased dramatically. As a result today’s employees and managers must be experts in their career specialty and also must demonstrate academic preparation, including business management, marketing, computer expertise, foreign language, accounting, hospitality, law, operations management and human resource development. Skills are needed in communication, interpersonal relations and problem. The industry’s variety of career choices appeals to men and women. The lodging industry has a variety of employment opportunities from luxury resorts to bed and breakfast operations. Food services include positions in hospitals, nightclubs and restaurants.
